Chapter Fifteen

Gage woke up with a head that felt like it was about to explode. Groaning, he bolted off the couch and made it to the bathroom in time to unload the contents of his stomach. As he stood there over the toilet, he decided to seriously evaluate his alcohol consumption and the merits of decreasing it. Searching his carry-on, he found his ibuprofen and downed four of them before he took a quick shower.

Gage called room service and ordered a pot of coffee. He’d just sat down with his first cup when his phone buzzed with a text. Looking at the screen, he noticed he’d missed quite a few messages from his family, all wishing him a Happy New Year so he responded in kind as he drank his coffee. Until he got to the most recent one, and his finger paused over the message when he saw it was from Nikola. Taking a deep breath, he tapped the screen and was relieved to find it simply stated that a meeting had been set up with Nedim for that evening and Amel would be picking him up at five. There was nothing else—no apologies, no explanation.

Remembering the rage he’d felt as Nikola sat on his back and held him on the floor, brought back the urge to punch Nikola for a second time as he’d pinned him to the wall. Thankfully, he knew it wouldn’t have been good to beat Nikola to a bloody pulp, no matter how much he’d deserved it at the time. He read the text again. He guessed he shouldn’t have expected anything more after he’d pretty much kicked Nikola out of his life when he’d kicked him out of the room. In the light of day and with a sober mind, Gage realized he’d overreacted, but at the time, he couldn’t stop the hurt from turning to anger. Even as he sat there, he couldn’t find the strength to reach out to Nikola.
